Two Town Centers bug

How does it work? - Consequences - How to fix it

How it works

This bug works best on medium or high resources. What you do is to delete your Town Center as soon as you have stockpiled 400 wood and found two good spots for a Town Center (e. g. with berries and trees). Then you use the "building queue" feature and build both Town Centers at once, holding SHIFT when giving the first building command. This trick has been found by THoTH.

Consequences

Like this, you can get more than one Town Center before you have a Government Center, and as soon as you reach the Tool Age, you have a huge advantage using this technique. E. g. you can still get villagers while upgrading to the new age, and you can produce villagers twice as fast when you have farms that give you enough food for that. This is certainly not in the spirit of the game, and I recommend that this is fixed with the patch. Otherwise, leagues and ladders might be ruined with this trick - especially since the usefulness of it depends very much on the map.

How to fix it

There are several ways to prevent this trick:
  1. disable the building queue feature altogether - it is only really useful in deathmatch anyway
  2. restrict this feature to certain building types, e. g. only houses, only buildings that produce troops + houses, all buildings except the Town Center
  3. make it impossible to self-destruct the Town Center - since this building is immune to conversion, deleting it makes no sense normally. This idea came from Greg Shaffner. Whichever alternative might be chosen, I hope that it will be fixed soon. It is the only bug that seriously affects multi player games.
